Want to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and beauty to your yard? With a little planning and the right plants, you can create a vibrant, low-maintenance desert landscape that supports pollinators and saves water.
Gardening in the Desert: Tips for Success
Avondale Water Conservation, Water – Use It Wisely, and AMWUA are here to help you thrive in our unique desert climate. Here are some simple design rules to get started:
Design Basics:
-
Keep it simple. Try using curved lines for walkways to create flow and space.
-
Define a theme or goal
-
Use 1–2 focal points (plants, art, or furniture)
-
Limit your list (simpler is better!). Plant in odd-number groupings (3, 5, 7)—great for pollinators
-
Leave open areas for birds to forage and to rest the eye.
-
Use native plants to for a more natural look (HOA rules apply).
Pro Tip: Smaller plants (1-gallon size) and 15-gallon trees are more affordable and establish faster than larger sizes.
Save Water & Energy/Utilize Shade:
-
-
East/West: evergreen trees
-
South: deciduous trees
-
Walls: vines on trellises or Ramada's
-
-
Limit turf and water features.
-
Group plants by water needs.
-
Use mulch and rain-harvesting strategies (berms, swales, rain barrels).
-
Upgrade your irrigation system—Avondale offers a $100 rebate on smart irrigation control timers!
Right Plant, Right Place:
Plan for the plant’s mature size to reduce pruning and water use. Constant pruning = more growth = more water needed!
- Try composting to reuse garden waste. Take a composting workshop.
-
Add edible plants or create a small productive garden, we have a workshop for that too.
Plan Your Space Like a Pro:
-
Create a rough site layout or bubble diagram.
-
List your wants and needs.
-
Pick your color palette first, then choose plants.
-
Group plants like furniture—form + function.
-
Stick with low water use plants.
