Recycled Oil
The City of Avondale has partnered with Mahoney Environmental for the oil recycling program at no cost to the City and the Avondale community. Avondale was the first West Valley city to pilot an oil recycling program. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of sewer blockages and overflows caused by fats, oils, and grease (FOG) put down the drain into the sanitary sewer system. Mahoney Environmental uses the discarded used cooking oil to produce a clean alternative to conventional diesel fuel that may be used for fueling trucks, buses, and other vehicles.
During the holiday season the City’s wastewater system can be overloaded with FOG. Cleaning can be time consuming and costly to customers and the City. With the oil recycling effort, we are lowering FOG in the sewer lines, reducing sewer overflows, and turning a waste product into a valuable resource.
Each year, by participating in this program, residents typically keep about 500 gallons of used cooking oil from entering the sewer system by using this service.
Follow these four easy steps to recycle your cooking oil:
- Let the oil cool
- Carefully pour the cooled cooking oil into a sturdy plastic, leak-proof container, such as the original container
- Cap the container so it is secure, DO NOT mix with any other liquids or products
- Schedule your appointment for a free pick-up
We accept all cooking oils: vegetable, canola, corn, olive, peanut, sesame, soybean, and sunflower, as well as frying oil, meat drippings, and lard.
Recycling your used cooking oil is a great way to protect the environment and keep your sewer free flowing! For more information contact the City of Avondale’s Pretreatment Program at pretreatment@avondaleaz.gov or (623) 333-4400.
