All-Hazard Incident Management Teams (AHIMT) play an essential role in the management of, and response to, local/regional/national emergencies, natural disasters, and public events. Avondale AHIMT members strive to improve their professional development and preparedness through the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affair's Arizona Qualifications System (AQS). AQS is closely based upon FEMA's National Qualification System (NQS) where AHIMT members receive over 100 hours of NIMS training and work to complete Position Task Books with the goal of attaining qualification and credentialing in any of FEMA's National Incident Management System (NIMS) Command and General Staff positions.
In order to provide effective communications, security, and emergency response during large incidents or planned events within the city, Avondale staff work in cooperation with multiple local jurisdictions, non-governmental organizations, and businesses through its AHIMT using NIMS. The AHIMT was integral in the City of Avondale’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and helped coordinate internal and external messaging, personal protection equipment (PPE) purchase and distribution, facility decontamination, policy changes, and employee/citizen safety. The team is also active during the two NASCAR races held annually at Phoenix Raceway.
