The Avondale Police Department conducts a multi-phased assessment with the assistance of the City of Avondale Human Resources Department. Each phase of the process is designed to challenge candidates resulting in the most qualified applicants for the available positions. The entire hiring process generally takes 3 to 4 months.
The phases include:

- Physical Agilities Test (PAT): The PAT is designed to reflect the real-world physical demands of policing. The course measures a total of 870 feet (290 yards/265.2 meters) and is designed in a continuous format. Candidates will complete a series of tasks that simulate essential job functions, including:
- Dummy drag: you must drag a 150-pound dummy 20 feet.
- Stair climb: You must run up and down a set of stairs at least twice, touching each step on the way down.
- Low crawl: You must move under an obstacle that is set 2.5 feet above the ground
- Fence climb: You must climb over a 4-foot chain-link fence
- Window climb: You must climb through a 4-foot-high window
- Ditch jump: You must clear a simulated 6-foot-wide ditch
- Hurdles: Be able to jump over 2 1/2-foot hurdles
