The Avondale Police Department conducts a multi-phased assessment with the assistance of the City of Avondale Human Resources Department. Each phase of the process is designed to challenge candidates resulting in the most qualified applicants for the available positions. The entire hiring process generally takes 3 to 4 months.
The phases include:
1. Written Exam
2. Panel Interview
3. Physical Fitness Test (Peace Officers Physical Aptitude Test):
• 99-yard obstacle course
o Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle that must be vaulted.
• Body Drag
o Lift and drag 165-pound, lifelike dummy 32 feet
• 6-foot chain link fence
o Run five yards to a six-foot, chain-link fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
• 6-foot solid fence climb
o Run five yards to a six-foot solid fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
• 500-yard run
o Run 500 yards (equivalent to one lap plus 60 yards of a standard running track).
