Avondale Fire & Medical Division of Professional Standardsis dedicated to the training, record keeping, EMS QA/QC, EMS continuing education, and health, safety and wellness of its members.

Avondale Fire & Medical Division of Professional Standards is dedicated to the training, record keeping, EMS QA/QC, EMS continuing education, and health, safety and wellness of its members. Headed by one Division Chief and supported by two Training Captains, Professional Standards works rigorously to prepare our members for the challenges of emergency service delivery as well as protect them from both the short and long term dangers they may face during their careers.

Training

AFM personnel constantly train on all aspects of our customer service delivery including EMS, fire suppression, technical

rescue, violent incident response, community risk reduction, and community education. Training hours are tracked using Target Solutions to ensure the AFM members meet the wide range of Insurance Services Office (ISO), NFPA, Federal, State, and local training requirements. Partnering with other fire departments, AFM participates in the West Side Training Consortium (WSTC), a conglomeration of numerous fire departments on the west side of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Newly hired fire recruits complete a 14-week academy at the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center (GRPSTC) which teaches them Firefighter I and II skills, driver's training, Wildland firefighting, EMS, basic Hazmat, and physical fitness. Continuing Education and Career Development

The Division of Professional Standards continues to work hard ensuring AFM personnel are provided the training and continuing education needed to help them advance their careers long after the academy is over. This includes rigorous programs aimed at preparing members for the roles of Engineer (driver/operator), Company Officer, and Battalion Chief. It also provides continuing education to ensure EMT and Paramedic certifications are kept current with the latest NREMT and State EMS requirements.

Training Facilities

In addition to using the training buildings, props, and classrooms available at the GRPSTC, AFM is in the process of building the AFM Training Center, located at 395 E. Lower Buckeye Road in Avondale. The training center is much smaller than GRPSTC but closer to both Avondale, allowing crews from local departments to accomplish training requirements and objectives with less out-of-service time due to travel.
