According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks have been one of the leading causes of injuries serious enough to require hospital emergency room treatment. Fireworks can result in severe burns, fractures, or scars or even death or disfigurement that can last a lifetime.

Arizona Revised Statutes section 36-1606, consumer fireworks are permissible for sale during the following dates: April 25 through May 6, May 20 through July 6 and Dec. 10 through Jan. 3 of each year and two days before the first day of Diwali through the third day of Diwali each year. The use of fireworks is permissible May 4 through May 6, June 24 through July 6 and Dec. 26 through Jan. 4 of each year and the second and third days of Diwali of each year.

A Retail Display and Sales of Consumer Fireworks in Temporary Facilities permit is required for the storage, handling, display or sale of consumer fireworks.

An Outdoor Fireworks Displays, Proximate Displays, and Pyrotechnical Special Effects Permit is required for storage, handling, or use of any quantity of fireworks or pyrotechnical special effects.

Arizona State Laws

Consumer fireworks may not be sold to persons under 16 years of age and is prohibited on public property, including streets, city parks/open spaces. Consumer fireworks use is allowed on private property within city limits, with the owner’s consent.

(f) Prohibit on all days the use of permissible consumer fireworks between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., except:

(i) Between the hours of 11:00 p.m. on December 31 of each year through 1:00 a.m. on January 1 of each year.

(ii) Between the hours of 11:00 p.m. on July 4 of each year through 1:00 a.m. on July 5 of each year.

The use, discharge or ignition of fireworks within the corporate limits of the city is prohibited, except for the limited use of permissible consumer fireworks during the time periods and under the conditions provided for in Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 36-1606.

Celebrate Without Fireworks

Use Fireworks Safely

Use only state-approved fireworks purchased from authorized dealers.
Observe local laws and use common sense. Always read and follow the directions on each firework.
Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
Have an adult present.
Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass, shrubs and trees.
Light only one item at a time and keep a safe distance. Many fireworks come with a fuse that glows in the dark. Use a flashlight when lighting a firework.
Have a hose ready.
Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
Never attempt to relight a "dud" firework.
