All-Hazard Incident Management Teams (AHIMT) play an essential role in the management of, and response to, local/regional/national emergencies, natural disasters and public events. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) provides professional development support to help AHIMT members obtain the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively as a team under stressful, dynamic conditions.
Avondale's AHIMT is recognized by FEMA as a Type III IMT in the State of Arizona. In order to provide effective communications, security and emergency response during large special events within the city, Avondale staff work in cooperation with multiple local jurisdictions, non-governmental organizations, and businesses through its AHIMT using FEMA's National Incident Management System (NIMS). Such events include two NASCAR races held annually at ISM Raceway in Phoenix (formerly Phoenix International Raceway).
When called upon, some members of Avondale's AHIMT are available for deployment on larger Type II and Type I Incidents, both inside and outside Arizona. In 2016 and 2017, these incidents included large wildfires in New Mexico, California, and Washington.
