The Avondale Fire and Medical Department’s sworn and civilian staff are dedicated to providing a variety of programs to Avondale residents.

Avondale Fire & Medical programs offer the opportunity to learn from department staff about fire operations, prevention, technical rescue and more. For more information please follow the links below.

Camp HERo

Camp HERo provides a unique opportunity to explore this exciting field. Avondale Fire and Medical's female firefighters will give hands-on training in firefighter skills, fire safety, and earn a CPR certification. Scheduled from October 6th to 9th, this camp offers an exciting experience for girls who are new to the fire service. Take this opportunity to ignite your future—register now under the SPECIAL INTEREST CLASSES tab on the Avondale Parks & Rec website.

All applicants must be girls between 14 and 18 years old and should be able to show a completed physical release form.

Camp HERo Schedule:

Monday, October 6th 8:00AM to 2:30PM at Avondale Fire Station 172

Introductions and expectations with dinner for families included.

Tuesday, October 7th 8:00AM to 2:30PM at Avondale Fire Station 174

Hands on activities, interviews with the firefighters, lunch included.

Wednesday, October 8th 8:00AM to 2:30PM at Avondale Fire Station 174

Hands on activities, interviews with the firefighters, lunch included.

Thursday, October 9th 8AM-2:30PM at the Phoenix Raceway

Mentor Programs

In 2019, Avondale Fire and Medical partnered with Avondale Middle School to pair Avondale firefighters with students for the purpose of providing them mentorship and guidance during the school year. The program was a wild success with AMS staff reporting a marked improvement in student attendance and performance. With Mentors working with AMS staff, grants and community business donations have been secured to help provide students with everything from tutors to school supplies.

Fire & Medical Citizen Academy

Avondale's Fire and Medical (AFM) Citizen Academy is a program designed for citizens of Avondale, surrounding communities, and members of the business community to provide an inside look at the Avondale Fire and Medical Department. This is an 8-class program hosted by AFM Administration where participants will earn certificates in CPR and Stop-The-Bleed. Each session will include dinner, followed by presentations and hands-on activities. Locations will vary between the Avondale Fire and Medical facilities.

2026 AFM Citizen Academy is scheduled for March 2026 to April 2026
