The City of Avondale’s Intergovernmental Affairs Division advocates for city interests at the regional, state and federal levels of government by collaborating with stakeholders and policymakers. The division works to protect city interests, advance policy priorities, and resolve issues with external partners.
The Division is responsible for tracking, researching, analyzing and advocating for or against legislation at the state and federal level.
The Guiding Principles of the Division include:
Preserve Local Funding Mechanisms
Protect existing federal and state funding sources that generate revenue to the City of Avondale. Work to maintain local taxing authority and oppose unfunded mandates.
Oppose Preemption Legislation
Support efforts to ensure continued local decision-making authority. Like other municipalities, Avondale has unique needs and characteristics which are best met by policies set by its local governing body.
Maintain Flexibility in Service Delivery
Avondale knows best how to deliver services that our residents rely on in the most effective and efficient manner. Staff will work to maintain that ability without undue mandates or administrative burdens.
The Mayor & Council participates on various regional committees and organizations such as the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG); Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority (RPTA); Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA); Arizona League of Cities & Towns; National League of Cities (NLC); West Valley Partners; and WESTMARC.
