Avondale Councilmember Solorio Appointed to NLC’s First Tier Suburbs and Military Communities Councils

Avondale Councilmember Gloria Solorio has been appointed to the National League of Cities’ (NLC) First Tier Suburbs Council and Military Communities Council, two national bodies focused on addressing the unique challenges facing suburban and military-connected communities.

Both appointments are new for Councilmember Solorio and were announced by the National League of Cities. In addition to these appointments, Solorio serves on the National League of Cities Board of Directors, a two-year appointment announced by the City of Avondale in December 2025.

Through the First Tier Suburbs Council, Solorio will collaborate with local leaders from across the country to develop policies, share best practices and advance solutions related to aging infrastructure, economic development, housing, and community revitalization in first-tier suburban cities. First-tier suburban cities are typically older, inner-ring suburbs that developed alongside major urban centers and often face distinct challenges such as aging infrastructure, changing demographics, redevelopment needs, and balancing growth with long-established neighborhoods.

As a member of the Military Communities Council, Solorio will contribute to national policy discussions and advocacy efforts that support cities and towns with strong military connections, including issues impacting service members, veterans, and their families.

“I am beyond honored to continue serving nationally and advocating for Avondale. Every opportunity to represent our city on a national scale ensures we remain at the forefront of emerging issues and opportunities. I am thankful to not only serve here in Avondale but to be able to serve on a national scale as well. These new councils are powerful platforms for a city that is growing by leaps and bounds,” said Councilmember Gloria Solorio.

She also serves on the NLC Board Membership Committee, which focuses on recruitment and retention of member cities, and as Board Liaison to Hispanic Elected Local Officials, strengthening communication between NLC’s Board of Directors and its constituency groups. Solorio previously served for several years as an appointed member of Hispanic Elected Local Officials.

Solorio also continues her service with Women in Municipal Government, one of the National League of Cities’ six official constituency groups. Her two-year appointment supports the organization’s mission to advance women’s leadership in municipal government and promote collaboration among women elected officials nationwide.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization representing municipal governments, serving as a resource and advocate for cities, towns and villages throughout the United States.
