Today, the City of Avondale rolled out Love Local, a new campaign to raise awareness of the importance of dining and shopping locally in support of Avondale small businesses. The campaign kicks off just in time for the holiday shopping season with a new resource to help residents and visitors search for one-of-a-kind places to shop, dine and be entertained – right here in Avondale!

Avondale EDGE has joined up with SizeUp to launch an online platform to showcase unique eateries, shops, craft beverages, and entertainment venues operated by local entrepreneurs around the city. For a listing of places where you can Love Local by shopping locally, visit the Discover Avondale website at DiscoverAvondale.com/ShopHere. Through the Love Local tool on the Discover Avondale website, consumers are empowered to search for and explore local businesses by industry and find their location on a map along with the business’ contact information.

There are many benefits to spending dollars with locally-owned businesses. In addition to finding unique products that reflect Avondale’s distinct community and culture (versus commonly found items at national brands), it supports a business operated by a member of the community rather than an out-of-state stockholder. Additionally, more dollars stay local. For every $100 spent at a local enterprise, $68 stay in the local economy versus $43 dollars when purchases are made at national chains. Shopping local can reduce environmental impact when packaging, needed for longer shipments, as well as fuel used for transportation can be minimized.

“With the holidays upon us, we want to bring attention to something we should be doing throughout the year – supporting the many locally-owned businesses within Avondale,” said Ken Chapa, director of Avondale Economic Development and Tourism. “Shopping at independent businesses means your dollars continue to circulate locally and consequently, a multiplier effect happens. Buying locally helps our city thrive by generating taxes that support our community libraries, police, fire department, roads, parks, infrastructure, and more.”
