Avondale Takes Steps to Comply with Governor’s Executive Order

In response to Governor Doug Ducey’s June 29 “Pausing Arizona’s Reopening – Slowing the Spread of Covid-19” Executive Order, the City of Avondale announced that effective Tuesday, June 30, it will implement measures within the City to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Avondale.

“Avondale supports the measures announced by the Governor today. We urge all our residents to follow the public heath guidance that will keep them and our community safe, and slow the spread of this illness,” said Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise.

Governor Ducey’s order, effective tonight, prohibits mass gatherings, even if appropriate physical distancing is possible; organized events of more than 50 people are prohibited. The Executive Order enables local governing jurisdictions, such as the city, town or county, to approve events on the condition of meeting certain safety precautions, such as physical distancing.  In an effort to limit opportunities to gather, Avondale will cancel all organized activities, including on sports fields and at picnic ramada rentals, at its parks through the end of July, 2020.

The City will also cancel all sports league and tournament activities at City parks.  The American Sports Centers in Avondale will also be impacted by the Governor’s Executive Order and will be closed until July 27, 2020.

At this time, playgrounds, splashpads, dog parks, and the skate park at Festival Fields, will remain open, with strict adherence to CDC social distancing practices. Avondale Police and Park Rangers will be enforcing these restrictions.

To limit gathering in City Council Chambers, Avondale will continue to hold its Council Meetings via the Zoom meeting platform, which will be accessible to the public.

The Governor’s Executive Order also pauses certain business operations until July 27, 2020. This includes:

  • Bars with a series 6 or 7 liquor license from the Department of Liquor Licenses and Control (these entities may provide take-out and curbside service);
  • Indoor gyms and fitness clubs or centers;
  • Indoor movie theaters;
  • Water parks;
  • And tubing operators.

Unless extended, the pause remains in effect until July 27, 2020, after which businesses seeking to resume operations must demonstrate compliance with public health guidance as determined by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
