Bryan Hughes Named Avondale Parks and Recreation Director

Bryan Hughes, hired earlier this year as Avondale’s Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, was promoted to Director, effective today.

Hughes fills the vacancy brought about by the retirement of the previous Parks and Recreation Director, Kirk Haines. Hughes served as Community Service Director for the Town of Florence, and prior to that was Recreation Supervisor for Fountain Hills, AZ.  He brings more than 20 years of experience in parks and recreation management. He will oversee the operations of Avondale’s Parks and Recreation department activities and programs, including 255 acres of developed parks in the city.

“During the past couple of months, Bryan Hughes has served in the capacity of acting director for Parks and Recreations, and has handled the role admirably. The transition will be seamless, and we’re fortunate to have him on the management team,” said Avondale City Manager, Charles Montoya.

Hughes’ credentials include Certified Park and Recreation Executive through the National Recreation and Parks Association, and Certified Public Manager from Arizona State University. He is currently pursuing a master’s in Public Administration from Arizona State University, and has a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Administration from Eastern Illinois University. Hughes has served as President, Board of Directors member and Branch Officer for Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA).  He has been recognized for his outstanding professionalism by the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association multiple years, for his leadership.
