Avondale recognizes Fair Housing Month

April is National Fair Housing Month, which is a celebration of the anniversary of the passing of the Fair Housing Act in 1968.

Fair Housing is the right to pursue the housing of your choice and is protected by Federal and State Fair Housing Laws.  The City of Avondale reminds all residents that it is illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, leasing and financing of housing or land to be used for the construction of housing or in the provision of brokerage services on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin.

“The City of Avondale is committed to affirmatively furthering fair housing and ensuring that all persons are given equal access to housing and housing services.  All persons have the right to pursue the housing of their choice,” states Marsha Chavez, Avondale Housing and Community Development Manager.

In support of Fair Housing practices in the community, Avondale offers a myriad of affordable housing and community development services to provide quality housing to low and moderate income households, and provides services to improve the character of existing neighborhoods. Funding for these programs may include federal funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program, and state funding through the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Program. For information on how future grant funds may be used in the community, please visit www.avondaleaz.gov/conplan.

The City of Avondale is taking this month to also remind residents about the owner occupied Home Repair Program. The Avondale Home Repair program offers financial assistance to owner occupied homes in Avondale, to improve the vitality of aging home infrastructure, address immediate health and safety issues, eliminate hazards, install basic ADA accommodations, conserve water and energy and address exterior code/blighting violations. The assistance is provided through licensed and bonded contractors hired by the City.

“Home repair is an important element in the city's strategy to enhance the quality and value of the neighborhood and to promote sustainable communities,” said Daniel Lander, Avondale Housing Rehabilitation Coordinator.  “It is important that our Avondale homeowners are aware that this resource is available to them”.
