Avondale Hosts first “Virtual Groundbreaking” Ceremony in the city

In keeping with safe distancing practices as a result of the COVID-19 situation, the City of Avondale’s Economic Development Department this week hosted a virtual groundbreaking for a new business.

On April 14, dozens of city of Avondale employees “gathered” together on social media to witness the groundbreaking for the future freestanding drive-though and patio coffee shop, Modern Grind Coffee.  Located at 13044 W. Rancho Santa Fe Blvd, the business is set to open in Fall 2020, with Avondale being the first brick and mortar Modern Grind location in the country. The groundbreaking event was streamed live via Facebook Live and Instagram stories, and was a huge success with more than 3,000 views and much audience engagement through likes and comments.

Avondale Councilmember Mike Pineda was at the site of the groundbreaking, joining owners Daphnie and Bryan Kelly in the ceremonial “turning of the dirt.” The City of Avondale provides these types of celebratory events for Avondale businesses free of charge. However, due to COVID-19 precautions, Avondale’s Office of Economic Development worked with Modern Grind to put a twist on this groundbreaking event, keeping the number of people on site to a minimum, and instead, inviting the public to view the groundbreaking “live” on social platforms.

“We can honestly say that this groundbreaking was the most well-attended in the history of groundbreakings in our city,” joked Avondale Economic Development Director Ken Chapa. “We are excited to welcome Modern Grind to Avondale, and we look forward to all being there in person for the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening.”

Added Chapa: “COVID-19 has had a tremendous impact on our businesses in our community, and we want our local businesses to know that we’re there for them. We are here to mark important milestones such as groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings – we’re just doing it a little differently right now.”

The city is assisting in other ways. Avondale launched its Ready to Serve Campaign earlier this month, to raise awareness that many Avondale restaurants are still open and providing service at curbside or via delivery and takeout. A list of participating restaurants is shared on the Economic Development website https://avondaleedge.com/

The Avondale Office of Economic Development has also recently launched its biweekly Avondale Business Connection meetings. These meetings provide Avondale businesses a venue to engage with subject matter experts on a wide range of topics including SBA Programs, Social Media Strategies, Free Tools and resources, and hear from their peers on best practices.
