Avondale announces cancellation of sports leagues, programs and events   

The City of Avondale, acting in consideration of Federal, County and State recommendations to manage the Covid-19 epidemic, is canceling or postponing all city-sponsored events, classes, programs, and sports effective March 16.  Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to city services, keeping in mind that some changes are necessary to ensure the public’s health.

The Centers for Disease Control is recommending that individuals practice social distancing to minimize the risk of contracting the new corona virus illness and other respiratory illnesses. To minimize the potential spread of illness, the following changes will be in effect till further notice:  

  • American Sports Centers (ASC) Avondale: ASC Avondale, which operates at the city-owned Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, will suspend all programs, leagues and games starting as of today, until further notice.  www.ascavondale.com
  • Youth & Adult Sports: Competitive and recreational leagues are canceled.
  • Special Interest Classes: Dance, fitness, music, martial arts and other classes are canceled.
  • Special Events: All special events through early May, are canceled, including: CulturePOP, KidFest, Movie in the Park, and Avondale Fiesta.  
  • Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event:  Scheduled for March 21 is canceled.
  • Classes and Workshops: All classes and workshop, hosted at all city facilities, are canceled or postponed.
  • Senior Center: Senior Programs will temporarily suspend activities and transportation at the Avondale Senior Center until further notice.  Home Delivered Meal Program will continue. Participants who rely on the congregate meal program (lunch at the senior center), can pick up a nutritious Brown Bag meal from 11:30am to 12:30 pm on weekdays from the Senior Center, located at 1007 S. Third Street. If participants who normally receive transportation services from our Senior Center are unable to attend during lunch service, accommodations will be made to deliver meals. Weekly Mobile Food Pantry will remain in effect. For questions regarding the Senior Center, call 623.333.2705.
  • Libraries: Programs and activities will be suspended. Patrons are encouraged to use online services.   https://www.avondalelibrary.org/
  • Passport services:   Will be BY APPOINTMENT only. To schedule an appointment, please call 623.333.1200 or email CityClerk@avondaleaz.gov .
  • Facility Rentals: City facility/meeting room rentals will be suspended. Parks & Recreation will also suspend reservations for parks/fields, ramadas.   

Avondale City Hall will remain open for business, regular hours Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (City Hall is closed on Fridays.) Residents are encouraged to utilize online services wherever possible, including online water bill payment. Visit www.avondaleaz.gov for more information on available online services. The following facilities remain open to the public: City Hall, Resource Center, City Court, Police and Fire-Medical lobbies, Libraries, Parks. However, the city is taking additional measures to minimize the risk of spreading respiratory illness. Some of those measures include:

  • Advising those who are sick not to enter public buildings.
  • Encouraging interactions online, by phone, or by email, when possible.
  • Increased sanitizing efforts of city buildings, with special focus on high traffic spaces, including handrails, elevator buttons, and restrooms.  

 

 

“The health and well-being of our residents and customers is paramount,” said Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise. “We will continue to keep the public updated as we navigate this ever-changing situation in partnership with other agencies. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to seek updated information from official channels, including www.cdc.gov/covid19 for details on the symptoms, ways to protect yourself, and what to do if you think you are sick."
