Groundbreaking Scheduled for the Marie Lopez Rogers Complex, Care1st Avondale Resource Center

Officials will break ground at the future site of the new Care1st Avondale Resource Center at the Marie Lopez Rogers Complex, on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 995 East Riley Drive, the site of the future $11.7 million, 25,000 square feet facility that will serve as a centralized location for vital community services.

Scheduled for completion in 2020, the new complex will include meeting rooms, senior dining facilities, offices and space for providers of various programs that support residents of the community, as well as lush landscaped grounds and ample parking for patrons.   The Care1st Avondale Resource Center, which houses a multitude of services provided by partner agencies, will move operations from its current location at 328 W. Western Avenue to the new complex. The new facility will also house the Avondale Senior Center and operations of the Avondale Neighborhood & Family Services Department, currently located at 1007 S. 3rd Street.

Care1st Health Plan Arizona has provided operational costs and staff to support the center's day-to-day needs since it opened over 10 years ago. “Through our work with the Care1st Avondale Resource Center we have helped members of our community improve their health and wellbeing,” said Scott Cummings, president, Care1st Health Plan Arizona. “We look forward to our continued partnership with the City of Avondale and providing even greater access to much-needed resources to individuals in Southwest Maricopa County.”

The complex is named for Marie Lopez Rogers, the daughter of migrant farm workers in Avondale and a graduate of Agua Fria High School, who dedicated her professional life to social work before running for Avondale City Council. Her tenure included two terms as mayor, until her retirement in 2014.  This year, the Avondale City Council voted to name the new resource complex in her honor.

“The resource center has always been a lifeline for residents in need of assistance,” said Mayor Kenneth Weise. “It is fitting that this new complex be named after Marie, who has been a longtime supporter and advocate for the Avondale community.”

Partner agencies, and the community are welcome to attend the ground breaking.

‍Construction is supported by Abacus Project Management, Architekton and Haydon Building Corp.  The center is scheduled to be complete end of 2020.
