Avondale Names New City Attorney

The City of Avondale announced that it has hired Michael Wawro as its City Attorney. At its meeting on Monday, March 18, the Avondale City Council voted to approve Wawro’s employment contract. He will officially join Avondale on April 1, 2019, as the City’s first in-house legal counsel.

Wawro, who has 14 years of municipal experience in both civil and criminal law, will serve as the City’s chief legal advisor, providing legal services to the City Council, City Manager and all departments, as well as the City’s boards, commissions and committees. He will play a key role in the formation of the City’s in-house legal department. The City is currently recruiting four positions for this new department.

Said Wawro: “I am looking forward to this exciting opportunity and am ready to devote my talents, experience and energy to building a City Attorney’s Office that will be the pride of Avondale for years to come.”

Michael Wawro served as Assistant City Prosecutor for the City of Peoria, AZ, from 2005 to 2008, before taking on the role of Assistant City Attorney for Peoria, handling various types of civil litigation. He currently serves as a Justice Pro Tempore for the Maricopa County Justice Courts.

Said Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise: “Avondale is a city on the move, with a number of new major new projects and developments on the horizon. As our city grows, so too must our organization, and it’s time bring on an in-house legal department to serve the needs of our City departments and residents.”

“We are pleased to welcome Michael to the Avondale team,” said City Manager Charles Montoya. “Michael brings a wealth of knowledge and legal experience in municipal government and will guide Avondale through the process of forming its in-house legal team and outlining its functions within the organization,” Montoya said. He added: “The City wishes to thank Andrew McGuire of Gust Rosenfeld, P.L.C., for his years of service representing Avondale as our contracted City Attorney.”

Wawro graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science degree (Magna Cum Laude), and obtained his law degree from Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School.
