January Landscape Watering Reminder

Post Date:01/10/2019

Last weekend’s rain was a great start (most areas got .25- to .5-inch of rain) and we’re expecting more rain this weekend. Between the rains and the cool temps, you could turn off your controller for a few days or longer. Use the 'off' 'stop' or 'rain' setting on your controller to stop the watering cycle without disturbing your programs. See the bonus tips below about getting a Smart irrigation controller.

Leaf yellowing or leaf drop occurs naturally this time of year to plants such as palo verdes, mesquites, desert willows, elms, ash, and Texas sage. Leaf-litter provides beneficial mulch for your plants or use the leaves in your compost pile

Recommendations below are for plants that are established in the landscape (in the ground about two years).

Lawn watering

  • Summer grass (dormant Bermuda) - once every 30 days
  • Overseeded cool season grass (rye) – once every 10-14 days

If trees and shrubs are on the same valve

  • Desert Adapted - once every 35 days
  • High Water Use - once every 18 days

Tree watering

  • Desert Adapted - once every 45 days
  • High Water Use - once every 21 days

Shrub, groundcover, and vine watering

  • Desert Adapted - once every 30 days
  • High Water Use - once every 14 days

Cacti and succulent watering – if needed

Annuals watering - once every 10 days

Wildflower watering – once every 15 days if needed

Note: These recommendations are a general guideline only and may need to be modified for your specific site conditions.

Resist the Urge to Prune

We recently experienced below freezing temperatures throughout the Valley. Do not prune frost damaged plants or cold-tender plants until springtime. The frost-damaged stems help protect the living tissue below.
