2019 Billy Moore Days festivities to include Parade, Stunt shows, Games, Carnival and Stage Acts
Historic Avondale will come alive with good ole nostalgic fun, food, music, rides and more, during Billy Moore Days, a four day event named after Avondale’s founder. This street-style celebration takes place Oct 17-20, on Western Avenue. To add to the fanfare and community spirited fun, a number of friendly competitive showdowns, games, contests and stage acts will be taking place for everyone to partake.
Parade (Saturday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m.): Floats, balloons, horses, bands and entertainers are ready to march down Western Avenue for the Billy Moore Days Parade. The parade will feature dozens of colorful entries, decorated floats, marching bands, horse drawn wagons, dance groups, local celebrities and political figures, community organizations, antique cars, school clubs, scouts, and more. Prizes will be awarded for the entry with Best Overall Appearance (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place). Entries can register online at www.billymooredays.com.
Western Games (Saturday, Oct. 19, noon – 11 p.m.): Take a trip back in time with Comedy Stunt Shows, horsemanship demonstrations and good old fashioned fun! Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show entertains with free kids activities, such as Panning for Gold, Bow & Arrow Bulls Eye Quest, Rubber Band Guns and Rodeo Calf Roping. Kids can be ‘branded’ at the free face paint station. The entire family is invited to take part in friendly competitions, including sack races, the Yee-Haw hollering contest and even a mustache and beard contest.
Barrel Wars (Saturday Oct. 19, 3 p.m.): Come to witness a fantastic battle of the hoses! Watch as Avondale firefighters conduct this battle with fire hoses as they push a barrel back and forth along a cable. Cheer on your favorite team and cool off as water flies. Pre-register online.
Pie Eating Contest (Saturday, Oct. 19, 2 p.m.): Join us for a pie eating contest on the Family Stage. There is an opportunity for everyone to participate as the contest is divided into age divisions from ages 3 to adult. Pies are provided by Village Inn and prizes will be awarded. To sign up, stop by the Village Inn booth by Saturday 1 p.m.
Corn Hole (Saturday, Oct. 19, 4 – 10 p.m.): Bring your own partner and compete in either the social division (casual/backyard players welcome – $5 per person) OR the experienced division (regular/consistent players $10 per person). Both tournaments start at 4 p.m. but you can check in and warm up starting at 3 p.m. Pre-register online.
Headline Stage Acts & Entertainment (Friday, Oct. 18 & Saturday, Oct. 19): The lineup of music performances Friday and Saturday are vast as the list includes local acts such as Somos Charros y Cantamos… Si Señor, La Luz de Luna, representation from Miss Latino America, and more. The family stage will feature a square off of Avondale’s Got Talent, along with a variety of local performance and dance companies from folkloric, hip hop, cheer and more. Headline performances on Friday is Str8up, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday evening headliners include The Backroads, on stage at 6:30 p.m., and Gustavo Angeles at 8:30 p.m. Visit the website for the complete stage list schedule, and bios of the headline performing acts.
Carnival (Thursday, Oct. 17 – Sunday, Oct. 20): DeConcini Park lights up with fun and excitement during all hour days of the carnival. A large variety of rides include favorites such as the ferris wheel, the zipper, and fun house. Carnival food like corn dogs, funnel cakes and candy apples will be available for sale. Carnival times vary, and are listed online, along with pricing.
