(Avondale, AZ) The cities of Avondale and Goodyear, in collaboration with Estrella Mountain Community College, will celebrate cultural unity by hosting a large pop-up street festival in the Southwest Valley.  Taking place on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. right in the middle of Thomas Road, just west of Dysart, the CulturePOP Block party is free and open to the public.  Offering a fusion of arts, culture and entertainment, the celebration includes a variety of live performances on two stages as well as street entertainment such as jugglers, stilt walkers, fire dancers, roaming dance groups, a Chinese dragon, African drums, and Arial artists. Amusement rides and a variety of foods from over two dozen food truck and culinary vendors. Beer and wine is also available for purchase.

Main Stage Entertainment

6:30 p.m. Power Drive; contemporary Pop and Latin music including a diversity of bilingual format sounds and beats to include salsa, cumbia, and even rhythm & blues.

8:30 p.m. The Chadwicks; performing a fusion of rock.

In addition to the Main stage lineup, there will be a second stage, The Anderson Institute of Music Stage featuring local youth performing artists and cultural dance group starting at 6:00 p.m.

Pre-event festivities – Celebrate Black History Month; Naturalization Ceremony; Splash of Color 5K Run

If you choose to come to the event early, there is plenty of campus activity at EMCC, which is hosting a Black History Month Community Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Ceremonial Plaza.   The celebration will highlight black history, culture and heritage in the Southwest Valley and feature food, crafts, vendor booths and performances. This year’s entertainment will pay tribute to the late Aretha Franklin.

At 5:30 p.m. you are invited to attend a Naturalization Ceremony: Approximately 50 people from all over the world will take the oath to become United States citizens at the CulturePOP Main Stage.

Agua Fria Health Occupations Students Association proudly present the first annual 5k HOSA Splash of Color Run.  Runners will be doused in happy color as they kick off the CulturePOP event. The finish line of the race is the entry into the Block Party.  HOSA is hosting and coordinating this portion of pre-event festivities, the run starts at 4:30 p.m.  All proceeds from the Splash of Color Run will go towards The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Getting There

•Parking - Free parking is available at Estrella Mountain Community College, 3000 N. Dysart Rd.

• Road Closure/Detours - Thomas Road will be closed Saturday, Feb 9 from 6 a.m. till midnight, between Dysart Rd. and 135th Ave. Detours will be set up for local traffic. Dysart Road will not have closures. Access to Estrella Mountain Community College and the surrounding neighborhoods will be available throughout the duration of the event. Zoom bus service will be detoured, stops on Thomas Rd will not be available on this date.
